A 1-Minute Tool to Overcome Stage Fright

I used to be terrified of public speaking. Like, reeeeally terrified. Every time I had to speak in front of others, even with small groups and at family gatherings, it was a nightmare! I’d turn bright red, choke up, and sweat like Rocky at the end of his rounds with Apollo Creed. It literally felt like someone was beating me up.

I’ve come a long way since then. While I’m still a shy girl at heart, I’m now able to stand in front of large groups sharing my truth & knowledge without feeling like I’m gonna die, or pass out, or throw up. I don’t know about you, but this sounds like #victory to me!

Over the years, I’ve used and studied many tools to overcome stage fright and social anxiety. But there’s one in particular that has stuck with me more than others.

I call it the “YES meditation,” and I learned it from one of my mentors, the late Psalm Isadora.

  • It makes you instantly more powerful and attractive.

  • It prepares you to speak from a place of YES, which is the place where you say “Yes!” to yourself, your purpose, and your desires.

  • It helps you change the negative patterns that are holding you back.

  • It makes you get out of your head and stop worrying about the future.

  • It puts you in touch with your body and the present moment.

  • Set your timer to 1 minute.

  • Put your arms up straight in the air forming a V, like the sign of victory. Palms are open and facing forward. Inhale.

  • With energy, bring your arms down by your shoulders closing your fists, literally like you’d do if your favorite team just scored.

  • While you do this movement, exhale and scream “Yes!” as loud as you can, conditions permitting (you don’t want to scare your neighbors off!)

  • Put your arms back up and repeat for the entire duration of the minute.

(Worried about looking silly? Embrace it, that’s the best part! And don’t forget to go look yourself in the mirror once you’re done: you’ll be glowing!)

The best part (apart from the fact it’ll tone up your biceps)? You can do it even if you don’t have a speaking engagement coming up. YES for 1 minute right after you wake up. Do it multiple times a day. Say “Yes!” to yourself. The world’s ready. YOU are ready.
